Fighting fish are actually peaceful aquarium inhabitants and thrive with all fish that cannot be in their mouth. Only males of the same kind fight to death - hence the name! The beautiful, long-finned fighting fish we see in the animal trade originate from the species Betta splendens, which is also used for fishing matches in Asia.

Fighting fish and many other labyrinth fish (guramia, wire fish and paradise fish) live in both still and running water. They are ambushed predators who quickly appear with their superior mouthbuilding to grab insects that land on the water surface. They don't eat aquarium plants and don't require much space.

If you want to keep females together with a male, you always have to choose more females, as a single female will otherwise be hunted too much. The most famous species of fighting fish build marshmallow nests on the surface of the water, which the male guards. Other species are mouthwalkers who carry the eggs in the mouth until the young hatch and are large enough to fend for themselves.

Water values are not crucial for fighting fish. They prefer soft water and a pH between 6.5 and 7.5, but can adapt to many other values.

When it comes to feeding, it is important that the composition of the diet fits their natural diet. JBL PRONOVO BETTA as flakes or granules form the basic feed.
